OK. My two recent data points are both cases where there were multiple people on the reservation. (My most-common use of award points is for family travel...). In neither case did I get on the wait list. So this further confirms your theory.
I had hoped or assumed they would split the reservation, but that didn't happen.
My only recompense is that I was unlikely to have cleared anyway.
