The flip side of it is that the paid AA airport upgrades are relatively cheap (if available, and that is the key due to their until now very generous system of SWUs for ex-plats). I have done a few transcon A321 J to Fs for about $200 each. Worth it when travelling alone- pay upgrade and then straight through the white door at LAX!
