I think the spa/fitness access issue is cultural. It should never be assumed that any hotel in Japan will provide this. Most Japanese guests would never ask for access after check out time, unless they intended to pay to have access to the room until departure.
Agreed. If you ask for things in Japanese hotels that are "unexpected", you will not get the same response you would in somewhere like Thailand.
