Steamers work great on certain fabrics, like wool.
I wouldn't even think of heat ironing wool pants, jackets, or suits, especially because of the high risk of putting a shine on the fabric.
On the other hand, all you have to do with a steamer is fill it up, plug it in, hang up the clothes you want to steam and work the steam through the fabric. It will take out all the wrinkles without much trouble, and it would be next to impossible to damage the fabric with one.
