Well, for me it's a simple case of trying to utilize a stay booked by family member that would otherwise go unused -- perfectly sensible in my book. But I guess to each his/her own, just like on so many issues in the miles and points game

One of the drawbacks of booking a non-refundable hotel room is the possibility that you lose your money if you can't use it, as scheduled. As far as I'm concerned, a change of plans does not mean you should consider committing fraud.
