We spent a wonderful week last year in Sorrento as our base, then took day trips to many of the attractions in the surrounding area, including Amalfi Coast. We hired a car & driver (let me know if you would like contact information) who did the driving. I advise to do the same; you will be happy that you did, so you can enjoy the sights along the way. He also knew a wonderful local restaurant for lunch that we would never have found on our own. Sorrento is great as a base, since you can then use the train to travel to other sights or take the boat over to Capri.

We took a cruise ship from Venice to a number of the Greek Isles & would recommend that as a good option.
