Let's say A books the hotel and adds B as a second guest.
1) Can B check in and check out all alone? In other words, does A need to be at the hotel at any point during the stay?
2) A has no status but B does. Will B receive elite benefits (even though only as a second guest)?
3) B will pay for the accommodation upon check out. Does A still receive the night/stay credit?
Been mostly traveling by myself and first time facing such a situation. Obviously it can be YMMV depending on the individual hotel chains/regions/properties, but I'm just curious what's the common scenario based on your experience

If B is a)only guest b)elite
then why the heck is not B booking the room for themselves?
Most times no issues but remember IHG does not like members doing this
1) yes it is allowed that additional guest checks in first and is still ok if booking guest never turns up
2)Strictly speaking bennies are meant to be as per booking guests status
However in practise hotels usually give the benefits of a higher elite additional guest if mentioned during checkin. However a bit unfair on hotel as they prepare upgrades each day before guests arrive and then hotel has to manage an unexpected upgrade in this scenario and if fully booked then often no upgrade is possible but other bennies given
3) Under IHG corporate rules for hotel , hotel is meant to change room to additional guest name and remove your IHG number at additional checkin. Then during stay or at checkout if you present yourself your name/number can be added back
In practise this is not always done by hotels, but doing this deliberately for A to earn qual night, points, bonuses, elite status can lead to IHG Corporate closing A's account and confiscating any points balance
And similarly B can have account closed for running a defacto duplicate second account
