The USB sockets on board basically aren't designed primarily for power delivery, and so, on many models, only deliver 0.5A current. However, most modern smartphones are designed for use with adapters that pull down 2A (both at 5V). Basically, if you're using your phone to watch a movie or something computationally and therefore power intensive, on-board USB might not cut it.
The power plugs would be the preferred method to charge here

Yeah it was useful for watching movies on a high brightness. When I was half asleep listening to my podcast did slightly better.
