Interline booking systems is still the same PNR (Passenger Name Record) based system created in the 60s.

I don't think it is possible to change name in interline booking. Your best bet is to have DL and VS document your son's nickname and real name in the PNR OSI or memo field. I don't know how VS will deal with TSA APIS for return segment.
