I have spent the last two New Year's eve's in Bangkok - what a blast. I can tell you that like most major cities the popular places (i.e. rooftop bars) sell out quickly as most do a planned event that night - so "bar hopping" - an incredibly popular sport there - is tough on NYE. That being said - they have a TON of free events - and if you want to experience it more like a local then I would recommend that you head to the Ratchaprasong area - it's near Central World / the shopping areas. They close the streets for the evening - set up a huge DJ booth / live music and have tons of street vendors with great local food - it's a lot of fun (if you are in to that thing). When you get to BKK you should immediately check with your hotel concierge / check out the local scene for things you might want to do - river cruise, roof-top party (Bangkok has tons of rooftop bars that are really great views and fun - and a bit cooler than street level).
Have a blast - be adventurous - find a proper (real) massage place and get two per day (one thai body massage and one foot massage) - they are only about $10 usd for an hour - and it feels SO good...

And as a man in his 60s who recently discovered the joys of a pedicure, I recommend that you get one at MBK.
