I just successfully booked multi-city for my parents a few weeks ago on AA.com. What I did discover is that it's much easier to sort by schedule rather than price. When I was looking by price I had to wade through all sorts of odd combinations that never seemed consistent. When I looked by schedule, the system would allow me to pick each leg separately, which was much easier.
