We often fly with road cases or Pelican cases. The largest is about 65 inches in "linear dimensions" which is over the limit, and weighs about half a pound under 70 lbs, which is the limit with *G status.
In terms of weight, we have often had to check that we haven't left an extra cell-phone charger or keyboard in the box, since there's no consistency in the calibration of the scales at the check-in desks, and they're *very* strict about this. If it shows up as 70.2 pounds, they'll generally try to charge us until we remove bits and pieces until it clocks in at <=70.0.
...but we never seem to get any grief for being slightly over-size.
Can anyone shed more light on this?
Is it, for example, a union regulation about ensuring the handlers are warned about bags above a certain weight, where the dimensions are somewhat less critical?
Any advice appreciated.
If they suddenly get strict about this, it's going to cost us enough money each week that it'd become worth commissioning custom-made flight cases.
I have never had a problem with bags being 3 to 4 lbs over wt with AC over my 30 flying. I did once get a over wt charge is Westjet for 1lb.
