I bought a few amazon gyft cards thru paypal over a month ago totally around $500 all $<100 each as it would not approve anything higher, then my account was suspended, then I "verified" the account with my DL which i think was a bad move, then bought another $<100 shortly after being verified. About a month later without activity I attempted to log into my account and it says its been closed. Thru email messaging I haven't gotten very far except they said they won't change their decision, and the only reasons they bullet pointed were "violation of terms" and "payment provider issue". I did attempt to first purchase a few GC of over $100 but I called both paypal and chase when that happened and they said they didn't see any attempted charges, meaning gyft blocked it every time (tried $500+ then $200, etc.).
So, I am out whatever 2% gyft rebates remain in my account which I cannot access ( not a big deal), and a friend sent me a $50 merchant card which I cannot redeem thru my account (says unclaimed in their account, hope that just goes back to their account so they can use it up).
My thoughts... Gyft pays paypal (or cc, etc) 1.5-2% and then *claims* to pay 2% rebate for pp/cc payments. Amazon is probably the lowest margin GC there is (after walmart, which they stopped offering a while back i guess) so maybe they noticed all I was buying was amazon and they might not make much if any money off me going forward with due to that and decided to cut ties.
So Gyft profits on whatever they buy bulk AZ gc at after processing fees and *gyft points*. They also probably sell my data, which is why I regret providing "proof of identity" of DL.
If anyone can add their $0.02 I would appreciate it. Seems like if your buying low margin cards they just nix you after leading you on to providing personal data. I did only sign up via email, less data than the other methods I guess.
Thinking about reporting them to the BBB. Its not much $ to me but I feel like they are using this service purely to extract personal data, i.e. a copy of peoples drivers licenses, etc., which at the very least is very dishonest.
Yes, similar experience.
I don't agree with your assessment about them fishing for personal data. What are you implying they do with our driver's license? Identity theft?
All the giftcard sites are hair trigger nervous and random about shut downs. Similar stories to ours are found with all of them. (I've also been shut down by saveya.)
