When I was a kid growing up in the historic district of Charleston, SC, (a peninsula with very little land that hadn't been built on more than 150 years earlier) my elementary school had no playground but used the churchyard of the First Baptist Church, established in 1689; so I not only ate many a lunch atop the graves, I grew up playing hide-and-seek among the headstones.

Maybe this explains a lot?
