How one time is "one time"?

So on my first true mileage run to make gold for 2016, my finstructor flight was delayed. I booked it as a round trip BOS- SAN, through DEN on the outbound and ewr on the return.
But: in my first experience with united IRROPS in 5 years, that bos-den flight mechanicaled to the point of missing all connections, which besides the 1st were scheduled for 1 hrs turns.
So the phone agent rebooted me bos sfo nonstop with return, but told me that it was a one time thing. How one time is this really?
