Check out the author V.S. Naipaul. He is considered one of the best english language authors of the 20th century, yet remains relatively unknown. I believe that he is from Trinidad, and some of his writings might give you some insights from a native who now lives in Britain. His friendship and ensuing spat with the writer Paul Theroux is told from Theroux's perspective in "Sir Vidia's Shadow". Some of Naipaul's books you might enjoy are "A House for Mr. Biswas", "A Bend in the River" and "Guerillas".
