You paid for a flight from DUB-LAX-DUB. They got you there, all be it with a delay. Delays are not that unusual. Getting you to the destination is the purpose of travel. Frequent flyer miles are secondary.

In this case it seems that the OP was going to LAX for business/holiday so you are right.
However, I just came back from an ARN-HKG-ARN mileage run. The primary purpose of travel was frequent flyer miles. If the flight had been cancelled and SK had guaranteed that I would get the miles without flying, I would have thanked them and gone back home. I don't enjoy spending 10+ hours back in the bus that much.
