I do agree that on a s/h evening flight they should just leave the lights off- when they're on, it's like being on a train / bus- much harder to see out of the window, and I find flourescent lights unpleasant at the best of times.
On a l/h overnight even people's reading lights 3 rows away are enough to stop me sleeping unfortunately, and I find eye masks uncomfortable, so I pretty much never sleep on a long overnight flight apart from intermittent dozing
There are some very comfortable eye masks out there, including some memory foam ones that keep the fabric away from your eyelids. I find these to be very effective and comfortable.
