re: cards, an AMEX card will let you redeem directly through their travel services (value is probably similar to what you have now), or transfer points 1:1 to Aeroplan or Avios. So you're flexible. Cards have different fees and earn ratios, you'll have to compare and contrast.
re: redemptions ex YYZ, Aeroplan will offer you better value IF you seek out and book with low-surcharge carriers (United is very useful ex YYZ).
re: BSL, is Basel your destination, or just closest to where you want to go? Because it will mean a change of planes somewhere (LHR in particular is not so fun), whereas e.g. flying into ZRH could be done directly (thinking of the kid).
