It's dark because people put the blinds down, choose a window seat and keep the blind up.
On most of the BA flights I've been on, it wasn't the passengers who closed the blinds, it was the crew.
On my recent AA flight, the crew member closed one of my blinds but happily left the other one open, as they could see I wished to stay awake.
