BA's J class too dark?

Hi, I recently took BA's 747 daylight (flight departed at 1pm) service between LHR and MEX, booked in WT+ with the intention to UuA to J. However, all J seats were taken so I ended up flying WT+.

In hindsight, I am quite happy about this, as I really enjoyed BA's WT+ product (even though it was the old 2000 setup). I found it very comforting to only have one person sitting next to me, having two windows and good food was a positive aswell.

Anyway:

During the flight I got up and had a short walk through the J and Y cabin twice and both times the (lower deck) J cabin was completely dimmed/dark and most people seemed to be asleep. Kind of a scary scenery to me considering it was mid-day...

Is this dimmed/dark J cabin even on daylight flights normally the case? If so, I would never ever book or upgrade to a J ticket as wasting 10 hours sleeping on a plane is not exactly my idea of a fun/productive flight, especially flying west.
