For those departing from ORD, they probably get directions from the GS/GF check in desk. Connecting passengers are left a bit on their own to try and figure it out.

Good tip mentioned upthread to check the back pages of the on board magazine. The maps there usually do a pretty good job of showing where airlines lounges are in the bigger airports.
I suspect this is on purpose. Reminds me of my first trip to Harvard. There were no signs anywhere. I finally asked about the lack and the response was "this is Harvard, if you don't know where you're going you don't belong here."
