Extra seats are ticketed using "EXST" (

t) as the first name and the last name of the passenger purchasing the extra seat.
That being said, it's "officially" not possible to purchase extra seats on AA.com and you need to call.

I doubt they would charge the phone fee since there's no official way to make these bookings online.
