There are married (and unmarried) couples who book two rooms, often because one is an especially loud snorer (and sometimes the other is a light sleeper), just as there are many friends or coworkers who share a room to lower costs.
And don't forget the couples who book two rooms because they're both chasing status!
I know of one Fortune 500 company that requires employees below a certain level to share rooms when traveling for business.
If I ever showed up at a hotel with such a bathroom "design" while not traveling solo, I would insist that the hotel re-book me at a comparable hotel at no extra charge.
The expectation of a solid wall and door to the bathroom is right up there with basic cleanliness.
