Usually for large purchases like that the auction house would want a wire transfer.
I'd assume that most places want wire because its less risky (as far as fraud) and cheaper then paying a CC processing fee. That being said, when its a place like this, and your a customer of known ultra high net worth, id bet that amex cuts them a great deal on fees, and fraud really isnt an issue if your a very well known billionaire.
