If the ticket is nonrefundable it's already a loss to the employer. Why not just call your old boss (or someone else in authority you're friendly with) and make the case that the money's already spent and nobody else can use it so why shouldn't you? This is not a case where it's better to ask forgiveness than permission -- just the opposite.
