There's another way. Many aircraft have an ID plate installed on the inside of the door jamb. You can look for it while boarding. It will show the "tail number" and the date it rolled off the assembly line.

Another way is to glance at the FAA Certificate of Airworthiness. It's in a holder near the cockpit.
