A friend was flying through MSP today and I booked a ticket to Chicago, got through security fine and cancelled the ticket. Delta did make me call rather than cancel online. The automated phone system couldn't do it either, so I had to have them call me back so a human could do it. The automated phone system issue may be that I am recovering from a virus and my voice sounds like rocks being crushed.
When I was in the security line, one of the TSA guys was asking people what they were traveling for. I had an answer prepared, but I didn't end up talking to him.
The issue is that an agent must undo your checkin for it to be cancelled. You can't cancel a flight reservation that you're checked in for.
