Transiting Barcelona & Madrid w/o Schengen

Hi Everyone - I'm trying to provide guidance for a friend who will be transiting Barcelona and Madrid enroute to South America and who does not currently hold a Schengen visa. She will be flying from Kiev on Ukrainian International Airlines in to Barcelona and from there to Buenos Aires via Aerolineas Argentinas. On the return she transits through Madrid.

The main thing I'm trying to find out for her is if she's going to need a Schengen visa to transit those two airports. She's only doing carry on, so no checked luggage. From what I can ascertain about Barcelona, both her flights should arrive and depart out of Terminal 1, so I can't see that she'd have a need for a Schengen. So far I haven't been able to find similar details about transiting through Madrid on the return trip. If anyone has further information or advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
