not sure how the waitlists work but if you buy the upgradable fares with U space open and are upgraded at time of booking you keep the upgrade. If you book flights for 2016 before Dec 31st 2359pm your elite status will be in the reservations and remain there unless you change the reservations OR if there is a schedule change drastic enough that requires a new PNR
