I think that's pretty much what they do with short or mid haul flights.

More for longhaul or special flights - but not anything amazing, from my memories of LAX-PVG or the DFW 77W inaugural for example, or the recent 787 one. I don't expect much at the LAX-SYD one, other than some speeches about AA returning to Australia, etc. Cake / snacks, commemorative gewgaws, and "we're boarding".
