I don't know where you've been flying, but I've been paying up to $100 in taxes for the past few years. It's nothing new to me.
I like AA's Web site because the fares quoted from the reservations system already includes the taxes. Other Web sites lure you in with these $99 fares. Then they tell you it's $99 each way. Then they tell you the fare isn't available on any of the dates and times you want to travel. Then they tell you there's another $80 in taxes and fees. Then they tell you the trip you thought was going to cost $100 is actually going to cost $500.
