SFO International: If you don't know where the SQ lounge is you'll never find it. Unless they've fixed the signage recently. Same with UA First Class Lounge. No signs except for a small one in front of the entry door.
The last time I was in HK (admittedly a long time ago) the only way I spotted the SQ lounge was because of the cardboard cutout of the Singapore Girl.
As others have said, ask the airline when you're checking in. Most have a preprinted map they'll give you.
The UA First Class Lounge at ORD is also pretty well hidden. I am sure it keeps down the amount of people trying to gain entry when not entitled, but can be tough to find the first time.
For those departing from ORD, they probably get directions from the GS/GF check in desk. Connecting passengers are left a bit on their own to try and figure it out.
Good tip mentioned upthread to check the back pages of the on board magazine. The maps there usually do a pretty good job of showing where airlines lounges are in the bigger airports.
