I am not familiar with exactly how the US multi-city function worked (I don't think i ever used it) but they way you describe it, it sounds to me like you may be able to replicate the functionality you desire by utilizing Google Flights. You can filter to OneWorld (or specifically to American) and then select leg by leg with the prices for the various options shown via leg. Then, when you are ready to book, Google Flights will link you through to aa.com so you actually book with AA.
