As long as you are not flying from a preclearance destination (island destinations only I believe) you have to reclaim your bags regardless of onward plans from CLT. Do your new plans have you staying in Charlotte or continuing on to somewhere else? If you opt not to formally drop the CLT-NYC leg and are flying onward on AA there may be problems with conflicting flights.
