Lithium batteries should NEVER be checked into the hold. They are a safety issue and can and have caused fires onboard aircraft. They are acceptable in cabin baggage because if they go on fire they can be dealt with. When they are transported as cargo they are classed as dangerous goods and must be uncharged and specially packaged. I saw one go on fire in the cabin once. It was not a pleasant experience. I'd hate to think what would happen in the cargo hold.
