By the same token, CX is competing ex-Taipei with BR and CI who have nonstops to many North American destinations.
Adding to insult, CAN-HKG-JFK-HKG-CAN is ~$4K USD as well. And you won't even need a positioning flight to TPE - a ~2 hr train ride is all it takes to save 5 Grand
