Policy vary from agent to agent.


I personally take all valuables with me (be it valuable in price, in emotion or in content), not only for the risk of being stolen, but also because for the risk of lost or damaged baggage.
Some may say, that it's more risky to go through TSA checkpoints though ...

As for extra batteries, I often have some in checked baggage, I never had any issue.
