With an 8:30am flight requiring a 7 a.m. arrival to the airport, I can't think of a single good reason why I would spend 70K points (or £150-200+) to stay in central London vs. 28K for the Park Inn or 44K for the Radisson Blu at LHR. (plus the outrageous cost of the Heathrow Express and a taxi to Paddington)

Stay at the airport, drop the bags after arrival and head into London for the day...

Thanks, Park Inn it is. Simple and easy. And yes, rather be closer to the airport, sleep in a bit more, than wake up early for a $$ transit back to LHR.
