Yeah, that is true. But something to that affect can speed up the overall process of closing the door and pushing back.
United mentioned they never intended for people to line up early when they came up with boarding groups, but a big reason for this is nobody (primarily in groups 3-5) wants to pay for a checked bag.
But as it stands now, they wouldn't have to pay even if they were the last on the plane and they had to gate-check it. I assume that will still be the case even if the changes from the other thread go ahead.
