I've had problems at NRT too. Back in late 80's I had a pocket knife in my pocket which I produced upon request. The moment I showed it I was immediately isolated from the rest of my fellow travellers (quite robustly) by the security while one of them measured the knife. As soon as he gave an approving nod after the measurment I was allowed back into the boarding line.

I doubt that they will catch their Red Army "most wanted-s" by such methods... these guys are a bit more radical than using pocket and Swiss army knives...
