You are not traveling on a first class ticket, as you didn't pay for one. Instruments have never been considered the same as cash in the transaction. We all know this. That UA even gives downgrade compensation to CPU or instrument upgrade when there is an equipment change surprises me.
My experience is on Delta. When I upgrade via an instrument, the new ticket is definitely First Class (or Business). The instrument isn't "the same as cash" but the resulting ticket has the same rights (e.g. SDC to any other flight with an available seat).
