For longer stays it often makes sense to contact the hotel directly and ask for a special rate and/or free upgrade to a suite or club, free breakfast etc.

Platinum is not worth much, i would not go out of my way to achieve it. Ambassador is worth the money, but only if you stay a significant amount of nights at Intercontinental hotels.
