If you request to be rerouted on another carrier under Rule 240 because of mechanical delay to your original flight, does the original airline have the responsibility of checking the schedules of other airlines or do you have to figure out what new flight you want yourself? Should the original airline confirm a reservation for you on the new airline or do you have to do that yourself. I was recently told by Hawaiian Airlines that I had to go to the United ticket counter and get them to take the Hawaiian ticket and find a reservation for me. I thought that Hawaiian had to endorse the ticket over to them. I eventually got Hawaiian to handle all the logistics but only after much discussion.

Hawaiian Air Rule 240
The meat of it is:

Any carrier causing such delay or in the case of a misconnection, the original receiving carrier(s) will transport the passenger without stopover on its (their) next flight on which space is available in the same class of service as the passenger's original outbound flight at no additional cost to the passenger.

It doesn't say exactly who looks up the schedule or which airline employee confirms the seats. Usually the delaying airline does that for you for your convenience, but if you already looked at the schedule and have a preference, they don't mind.
If you're asking if Rule 240 was broken in your case, the answer is no.

I was recently on a cancelled UA flight LGA-IAD. They said nothing was available on any airline for the rest of the day. I was out of luck.
I called US myself and got booked on the last flight out that night. Got a confirmed reservation and seat assigment even though it was sold beyond capacity.
Then I got the UA endorsement.
I find that sometimes I'm better off doing it myself!
