While we are on the subject, I've discussed this with a couple of the regulars on chat and gone back and forth as to what to do about it...
I was on an AA red-eye from SMF to DFW about ten days ago. I was in 6F (using my credits to upgrade so I could sleep) and had a non-rev AA gate agent flying in 5F.
How do I know all this? Because she loudly began chattering to her seatmate as soon as she sat down. Seatmate (who appeared to have been drinking for some time pre-departure and showing no signs of slowing down) who was obviously taken with this cute young AA lass began (also loudly) chattering with her.
Now to me, a stage whisper is too loud on the red-eye, but these two were talking in full on crowded restaurant voices.
I tried to settle in and doze, but couldn't.
I thought they might quiet down post take off (or at the very least, turn their reading lights down since neither was reading).
Finally, in a fit of frustration, I reached between the seats, tapped her on the shoulder, and asked them both to lower their voices as I could hear their entire conversation and had paid for the privilege of being able to SLEEP in first class.
She gave me a dirty look and did lower her voice, but I never was able to tune them out. Consequently, I lost sleep... I might as well have flown in coach. She also tossed me an odd glance upon departure, as if she were memorizing what I looked like should I ever show up at HER gate.
Some of the other FTs think I should write a letter as non-revs have some type of standard expected of them when flying free.
What do you guys think?
