Connecting in Shanghai is generally a bad idea; cx has ~15 flights/day between the US and HK (so there is no need to go via Shanghai).

But, for those hell bent on flying AA to Shanghai (followed by KA to HK), this plan is generally workable.

That having been said, things are not so rosy when flying east (because AA only has 3 flights/day from PVG).
