Was the rate you paid a non-refundable, pre-paid rate?
If is is not, I would try calling directly to various hotels 800 # and ask if they have a pre-pay rate, which is usually very attractive.
However, a pre-pay rate is almost always non-refundable, so if you have any doubts about your itin, do not do pre-pay.
