There's no way of telling in advance if you'll receive the points/credit, although others have posted that they have.
This is not correct, unless WN Visa is different from pretty much all of my other CCs. I have not spent lately on my WN cards (use them for convenience checks at <2% a year), so I admit it is possible that something has changed.
I have purchased tens of thousands of dollars of gift cards with Chase Ink at Staples/Officemax/Depot and get the 5x UR points. (In fact, $3K this morning and $2K yesterday). Subway, Amazon, WN, Disney, Amex/MC/Visa debit cards, Shell, Olive Garden, Albertson's, etc. Over 800K UR in the bank. Have used Hilton Surpass Amex repeatedly for points and credit toward Diamond status, most recently when pharmacies would give 6x HH and before the devaluation. SPG and Aviator and Citi Prestige and Sapphire repeatedly at Simon Mall for GCs.
All these yield points/miles. Others like Amex Blue/Preferred at grocery stores give the normal 6/5/3% cash back plus fuel rewards if applicable (Kroger, etc.). There are people basically doing this as a full-time job. I am a piker compared to some guys I know.
I do not think I have ever not received points/miles/cash on GC purchases, but of course have not inspected every item on every CC statement..
Now portals are another deal entirely. That is a crapshoot.
