I don't know, because there seems to be a difference between wording and behavior. I tried to convince someone months ago that it was domestic only based on the wording, and they came back and claimed it had been recently honored on a Canadian flight.
So the first thing you have to figure out is what the policy really is
at the moment. Your personal anecdote may not be enough! Is it really domestic only, or does it depend on the exact country you're flying to, or is it YMMV, or what?
(In other words, maybe it was the official policy for years but it's been spottily enforced and that's why you didn't run it before now?)
And one thing to keep in mind is that AA has a
zillion different definitions of "domestic": What is and isn't domestic for passports is not the same as what is and isn't domestic for 500-mile upgrades is not the same what is and isn't domestic for whether the second class up is called business or first is, etc, etc. And that's before getting to baggage, meals, and so on. There was a thread years ago that counted 7 different ways, in 7 different circumstances, that AA divided "domestic" from "international".
(So is it the policy of card benefits that changed, or is it instead some definition of "domestic" with respect to Curacao that changed?)
