October 2015 - Report
Hilton Mainz City:
With an overnight through FRA between flights, we decided to visit Mainz for 22 hours. Picked the Hilton Mainz City for proximity to the older part of the city.
Route: Took the S-bahn (S8 from the FRA Regionalbahnhof - track 2 when we were there) to Mainz Hauptbahnhof (4,55 euros, machines that take credit cards sell tickets on the track.) On Sunday the trains seem to run about every 30 minutes, trip is slightly under 30 minutes. The hotel is easy walking distance with roll-aboards but the most direct route is obscure (hooray for GPS).
The room: As HiltonHonors Gold, I was upgraded to a suite equipped with personally addressed welcome letter, complementary Toblerone, fruit, muffin, still and sparkling water, Nespresso and conventional coffee maker, and a pay-for minibar. (No view) Beds very comfortable, lighting a bit dim, didn't try the small-ish TV. Robes and slippers, Peter Roth toiletries including shaving kit, shoe shine machine at elevator. Full shower/bath tub. VERY comfortable overall.
Lobby was airy, nothing fancy. Small bar, drinks 50% off 1600-2000. Did not try restaurant but the breakfast buffet (complementary for HH Gold) was very good - they highlighted local products, including a homemade berry jam I could not identify.
Service was the best - very friendly, helpful, good French and English (the breakfast waitress, whose English was colloquial, had lived in Canada). Restaurant and walking recommendations spot-on. When we came back in the evening with cheese and smoked trout from a market and asked if we could buy just bread from the restaurant to make a picnic in the room, we were given rolls, plates and set-ups gratis. Two glasses of Riesling from the bar and we had a feast fit for kings!
Location - perfect for seeing the old city - it's walking distance to the Dom, the river, Sankt Stephan's church (Chagall windows) and the Gutenberg museum. There are lots of little restaurants - serviceable, not haute cuisine, but not chains either - within 3 - 4 blocks. I'd rely on the desk staff's suggestions.
Business features - it looked like they have several conference rooms, but I didn't look closely. The wi-fi was strong and ubiquitous, reasonable speed. Computer in sitting area available for surfing and printing boarding passes.
Thumbs up for a pleasant and comfortable travellers' hotel. Can't say enough good things about the warm and helpful staff!^^^
